As you can see, Barker and Hailey aren’t in the best of health right now. Somehow, some way, they went too far over the line between wrestling and fighting. I think an anger management course is in our future somewhere. Long story short, Sarah and I had the day off yesterday. We went to lunch, Lowe’s, and then back home to work some more on our den project. When I went outside to rest on the swing a while, Barker hopped up to swing with me, and that’s when I noticed that he had a quarter-sized hole in his back. I could literally see the muscle. We discovered that Hailey had wounds to her eye (split eyelid). Thankfully our vet was still open (only for 5 more minutes at the time I called them) but they stayed late and we went in for emergency surgery on both.

So now Hailey’s a cone head, and Barker is in a doggy hospital gown to catch the drain that comes from his patched-up gash. They are going to be spending time inside for the next two weeks while they are on antibiotics and while they heal. Hailey will be wearing the cone the entire time, and she’s already not happy. We are also crating them both. Unlike their nighttime ritual, they are not hopping up with me in bed ’til Sarah gets there (then they go on the floor), no… now they are crated, but still in the bedroom. I just couldn’t think of keeping them somewhere else. They are still in shock, too, I’m sure.

But it was indeed an emotional night for us last night. Sarah and I broke down because it’s just not like our pups to be like this, and have injuries to this extent. And now this has begged a solution to the problem — what are we going to do so this won’t happen again? The jury is still out. But Sarah mentioned building two dog runs. Not a bad idea. Now, how do you build a dog run?

Back to work today. Tired. I’m loooking forward to going home in a little while to take care of the dogs and perhaps even work on the den some more to get my mind on other thoughts.

The afternoon has been spent with a few irritating facts: slow people, stopped trains, and hyper dogs. Now, from Hailey’s picture above, you would never ever suspect that one would be such a hyper-active pup. But yup, that’s Hailey, too. Took Barker and Hailey both over to Dr. Locke’s office, although Hailey was the only one with the appointment. And it still cost $166!!!! OH MY GOSH. Yeah, her yearly check. I think, even though she was the one with the fecal check, I was the one on the end of their stick.

So, going over there, I was taking the usual route – First Street. Umm, HELLO TRAIN THAT STOPPED ON THE TRACKS AS I WAS SITTNG AND WAITING FOR IT TO PASS. This bleepin town has such a bad problem with trains going, going, going (while people are waiting, waiting, waiting) and then completely stopping while still in the middle of the bleepin railroad crossing! GRRR. So of course, I have to turn around and go under the Mulberry Street overpass. What about those people on Houston or Lamar (which are one-way streets?) There you will find some really ticked off people.

Then got to the office, and of course the dogs are out of control. The nurse told me at the end they were really good, well behaved dogs. Umm, lady, are you looking at me while you’re saying this, or is there someone behind me? Needless to say, they were very hyper. But they seemed to calm down after some talking to. While we waited on the results of the fecal, I kept talking to Barker about looking at my eyes when I say “look” and he was doing pretty well. It seemed to help him concentrate harder on me, rather than the enviornment around him.

Ahh, I hear a train now. Poor souls at the railroad crossings. Someone should REALLY put up a sign. Really.

Of course, the whole afternoon errands had to be behind slow people. I stopped at an estate sale. Saw an old style recliner I liked…. for $100. I didn’t like it that much.

I’ll upload that picture of Barker and Hailey sitting well behaved like at the vet. I think it may be brew time, unless Craig stops by soon.

If you know us, you know dogs sooo rule.  And that’s why I want to help dogs who don’t have homes.  The Sherman Animal Shelter is a wonderful facility, and there are many more shelters in our area (and your area, too, if you’re not in our area) that help our furry friends.  I will have some pictures very soon, and I am hoping to help them get adopted and find homes, just like our Barker and Hailey did.
